法新社報導，荷蘭海牙常設仲裁法院今天針對菲律賓提出的南海仲裁案做出裁決，認定中國對南海「九段線」內海洋區域的資源主張歷史性權利，沒有法律依據，美國政府呼籲雙方遵守仲裁結果。
國務院發言人柯比（John Kirby）說：「美國表達希望且企盼雙方將遵守它們的義務。」北京當局已表示拒絕接受裁決。
美國並未在這片300萬平方公里的海域聲索主權，但堅稱所有船運有權通過其視為國際水域的區域，美國且是與大陸發生主權爭議的諸如菲律賓等東南亞國家的盟友。
柯比說：「仲裁法院今天對菲律賓和中國仲裁案做出的裁決，對達成和平解決南海紛爭的共同目標具有重大貢獻。」
他又說，美國官員正「研究這項裁決，不評論本案的是非」。
